Hamifal Karmiel - the youth village
The Hamifal Karmiel Youth Village was established in 1978 and is located south of Karmiel.
It is located in one of the most beautiful places in the country, in the Beit Hakerem Valley, which separates the Upper Galilee from the Lower Galilee. The one-story village houses with their red tiled roofs, lawns and flowers, soak up a pastoral atmosphere that is beneficial for an educational setting.
The Karmiel Youth Village is the largest village of Hamifal, educating about 190 children aged 6-18 from all over the country. In the village there are 16 family homes of 12 children each.
The objective of the village is to provide these children with a remedial experience whilst ensuring that they feel part of a home and family based on the family cell model. This model is a temporary alternative to the nuclear family that is so important for normal development, for building a positive self-image, and for reducing educational, cultural and social gaps.
The village has a unique integration class which is designed to help new children reduce their learning gaps and encourage them so that when they eventually join the community classes in the regular schools, they are able to meet the requirements.
In this class the children are placed in small groups and teaching is conducted individually with a personal study plan that accommodates each student according to his level. As such, the pace of progress is determined according to their personal ability. The children are introduced to a wide range of topics which they get comfortable with through self-learning and persistent practice. The topics studied align with the school curriculum.
The village has an impressive petting zoo that has recently become an attraction for all the residents of the city. The village hosts many and varied enrichment activities that include a music school, a football field, chess classes, a singing band, a puppet theatre class and more.
In addition, there are various therapeutic educational activities that include:
- Arts Therapy: A unique therapy designed to help children who have difficulty expressing their feelings verbally.
- Learning reinforcement: Remedial teaching and tutoring in core subjects to assist children with their schooling.
- Library: A rich theoretical library that includes computers, a listening centre and a loan library, open in the afternoon.
- Extensive Music Activity: This includes a singing band, a choir and musicians.
- "Scales": In collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra, this program allows our children to understand their capabilities, enrich their self-image, and break circles of distress, through the use of music.
- Student Council: Elected in a democratic process, the Student Council initiates and runs various activities and is involved in village decision-making.
- Bnei Mitzvah project: This project has been operating in the village for many years. We work in coordination with the biological families in order to pull off the Bnei Mitzvah Project, which has become a household name.
- Parent-child activities: Here, we enable children to bond with their biological families through workshops, tutorials and joint projects
- The Children's Bank: The first of its kind, this project allows children to experience spending money and saving with a rechargeable card – through which you can spend money and deposit money. The project helps the children learn wise and proper financial management.
The village also has a home for soldiers without family support. The home was established thanks to a donation received from a generous donor from Mexico. The soldiers’ apartment is home to 12 of our graduates, who stay here on Saturdays, holidays, and during their vacations, allowing them to return to a warm environment and a proper home.
